How to Cook Vegetables

June 2nd, 2009

steamed-vegetablesVegetables are necessary to the human diet. The latest recommendation from nutritionists is a minimum of five serves of vegetables per day. The truth is we can get the majority of our daily vitamin and mineral requirements from vegetables.

We need to make sure that how we cook them does not extract vitamin contents and benefits of consumption.

Cooking vegetables can be a bit tricky. Over cooking can make vegetables tasteless and sodden. My belief is that vegetables should not be boiled. Boling not only robs us of vitamin content, it is the main culprit in turning vegetables to a lifeless, tasteless form.

If we cannot boil, how do we proceed?

Steaming vegetables is always a good choice. This will leave vegetables full of life and colour. They will be crisp and colorful. It will also not deplete the vegetables of their vitamin content.

It is a speedy way of cooking too. By rule of thumb, vegetables will only need a few minutes in the steam. In some cases you may be able to steam your vegetables on the table and immediately serve them up.

For those who do not have commercial vegetable steamers, an easy steamer can be fashioned out a of pot, a metal colander, and a pot lid.

Place a small amount of water in the bottom of a given pot. Place the metal colander into the pot. Start to boil the water. You will begin the see the steam rise. Place your vegetables into the metal colander and place the pot lid over the metal colander and pot. This collection of kitchen items will allow you to steam vegetables as good as any fancy store bought steamer.

Another good option is to cook your vegetables in a wok. The secret to the wok is that it cooks quickly at a very high temperature. Vegetables retain their flavors, textures, and colors with small amount of nutrient loss.

My favorite wok recipe for vegetables is to cook broccoli, carrots, bok choy, and snow peas in a very light chilli sauce. The vegetables remain crisp and the herb adds just the right amount of flavour. This combination can be served with any cut of meat including chicken, beef, pork, lamb or fish.

I hope you will see that secret to cooking vegetables is not to over cook. Vegetables need to remain crisp and full of color. As you learn different tricks to bringing your vegetables to life, these will become the most requested dishes on your dinner table.

Don’t Write Off Investing in Shares Just Yet

Some people have a different perspective on stockmarket declines. They see the low stock prices as a chance to buy a good deal.

During times of economic turbulence, it is our natural instinct to guard our wealth and distance ourselves from risk. While this reaction is not surprising, it can also mean missing out on profit opportunities created during crazy periods.

Warren Buffet, one of the world’s best known investors, sees market downturns from another perspective, saying “Look at market fluctuations as your friend rather than your enemy; profit from folly rather than participate in it.”

Generally when we see a lower price for something we want we rush in for a good deal, however it can be quite the opposite with shares. Why is it that we treat shares that have dropped in price with dread? Stock prices of a listed company can drop for a multitude of factors.

Lately we have seen the stock prices of a number of strong companies with healthy balance sheets be negatively affected due to a rush to sell as a result of the economic crisis.

Despite the uncertain trading environment, professional investors are always reviewing the market for buying opportunities. Many superannuation managers are searching to find stocks in sound companies with strong balance sheets and returns. For example Australian companies such as household names like David Jones have delivered strong profits after tax and dividends in 2008. However during 2008, David Jones’ share price fell by more than 30%.

Identifying opportunities
Not all companies will be affected by the global economic crisis similarly. Some industries are more susceptible to the business cycle than others.

Companies who deal in of basic goods and services continue on almost unchanged, for example we all need to eat - so food producers aren’t as affected as much as manufacturing, retail or luxury goods.

Australia’s population growth is at a 20 year high and growing at 1.7% per year. Australia’s growing population provides increasing demand for goods and services as people need food, housing, cars, etc. Unlike many overseas countries, Australia benefits from two key factors: a high population growth rate and a high demand for housing.

Population growth is nearly double that of the US while Germany has negative population growth. In the US there is an over-supply of housing while Australia suffers from a lack of supply. The combination of limited housing and a rising population will create growing demand for housing which will support further building and provide opportunities for the construction industry.

The value of companies
Many people view companies with falling share prices with fear, but we need to take a look under the bonnet of these firms to find out why. Have they borrowed heavily?

What industry are they in? Are they competitive against their peers? Only by answering these questions, can we know if their share price has fallen for valid reasons or if the company is indeed on sale.

When investing, many professional investors seek companies with high and maintainable returns, strong balance sheets and ongoing cash flow. These companies are more likely to outlast the volatility storm and may give you a greater return when the market moves into the next phase of recovery and
beyond.

Before you consider changing your investment, you should see a professional. Having a financial adviser and a long-term financial plan can give you confidence to manage the effects of market cycles. With the right advice you can ensure your investments are cut to your risk profile and time horizon, giving you the certainty of knowing you’re doing what’s right for you.
